PathFinder is an AppleWorks patch that replaces the disk formatting option with a new menu. This new menu lets you rename, lock and unlock files, drop the current subdirectory from the pathname, and most importantly, it lets you add new subdirectories to the pathname by choosing them from a list. Now using subdirectories is fun instead of frustrating!
This UltraMacros disk contains a demo version which allows you to test most of PathFinder's features.
Installing PathFinder
=====================
1. Make a backup of the working copy of your AppleWorks 2.0 program disk. As far as I know, any and all patches can be made to AppleWorks prior to or after installing PathFinder. That includes TimeOut, Super MacroWorks, AutoWorks, Pinpoint, AE and Checkmate expanders, etc. After you've made the backup of your AppleWorks program disk, boot the UltraMacros disk.
2. Select "Install PathFinder Demo" from the menu. You will be prompted to insert your AppleWorks PROGRAM disk.
3. Remove the UltraMacros disk, insert a backup copy of your AppleWorks PROGRAM disk and press Return. If you wish to update a hard disk, 3.5" disk or RAM disk, press Return anyway. You will then be prompted to enter the pathname to AppleWorks. The leading "/" is already provided, so don't enter it. For example, updating AppleWorks on a hard disk might require entering "HARD1/AW" or some such pathname.
Here's what happens to the AppleWorks PROGRAM disk:
a. The AppleWorks Other Activities menu option 5 is changed from "Format a blank disk" to "PathFinder".
b. The AppleWorks formatter is replaced with PathFinder.
Nothing else in AppleWorks is changed. Just remember to format extra disks before booting AppleWorks. Use a program like File.Mover from my BIG U disk (published by Beagle Bros), or just use an unmodified copy of AppleWorks to format disks. The best solution is my TimeOut FileMaster disk because it lets you format, copy and compare disks from within AppleWorks, along with giving you a lot of other goodies.
PathFinder Options
==================
When you select "5. PathFinder" from the Other Activities menu, you'll see this menu:

1. Add a subdirectory
---------------------
Select this option to see a list of all subdirectories in the current directory. Highlight the desired subdirectory and press Return. Although you can use the arrows to pick several subdirectories, the subdirectory used is the one highlighted when Return is pressed. The demo version won't actually set the pathname.
2. Drop a subdirectory
----------------------
Drops the last subdirectory from the end of the pathname.
3. Rename files
---------------
This option gives you a list of files in the current directory. Pick the ones you wish to rename and press Return. You will then be shown each one in turn and may edit the name to whatever you wish.
WARNING: Rename only your data files or programs you have written. Any files can be renamed, but changing AppleWorks program files could be fatal.

4. Lock files
-------------
Use this option to lock any files that you don't want to lose. AppleWorks will still load the files, but it won't be able to delete or save over them. You can now make template files accessible while protecting them from being accidently (or deliberately) altered.
Note: AppleWorks does not indicate if a file is locked or unlocked. Unless another user has PathFinder, he'll probably have no idea why his attempts to mess up your files fail miserably every time.
5. Unlock files
---------------
Unlock any locked files that you wish to delete or replace.
